Loong Foong Seafood Restaraunt at Taman Paramount, PJ - Pork Lard Galore

The best thing about working in PJ is that come lunch time, there is no shortage of good food to eat. One can go for quick lunches at MJ cafe at Jaya 33, or something more substantial in the surrounding areas, and even to SS2.

One of the more popular places known in PJ is Loong Foong Seafood. There are many reviews for the place, such as KY and others. However, this place is more known for its roast duck rather than its. Since it was lunch time, and the Lunch gang has been there before, we headed there for lunch.

Going there at lunch time was quite quiet, but you can immediately see why that place is famous for its duck. There was like 50 ducks hanging there drying... all naked and what not...

Disturbing...

Anyways, nude ducks aside, food came pretty fast. Pics ahoy...

Steamed fish with chilli paste. Fish was steamed very well, and the sauce did not overpower the fish taste. The addition of the pork lard on top gave it a slightly salty and crunchy feel.

Pork ribs... FTW!!!
Taufu. Now normally i prefer Japanese taufu, but this was amazing as it is...Not too bland.

Mixed beans with belacan. Probably the best belacan preparation since Kedah. The vegetables were fresh and complemented the belacan well...

Overall damage came to RM90 for the whole thing. Quite affordable, and the service was quick, which is important for us, considering that we have an hour for lunch. Will visit this place again, but i wanna try the duck rice. Maybe one night...

Red Village Thai Food - Alor Star Kedah...

A couple of weeks ago, I headed up to Kedah with the family, for the Merdeka weekend. The plan was to makan till we burst in Penang and relax in Kedah. Sadly, we could not do that much makan-ing in Penang coz of the rain.

However, in Kedah, where my dad is based, we were brought around Alor Star and we had Thai food. Now the Thai food in Kedah is better than most of the Thai food that we get here in KL, mostly because of the close proximity of Alor Star and Thailand, and the fact that most Thai places in KL are fancy restaraunts that cater more to high end customers, at the expense of its taste.

The best Thai food that we had there was at Red Village, which was one of the more well known Thai places there. Since my dad knows this place quite well, we let him order.

On with the pictures....

The appetizers, which was raw and steamed veggies (*ulams basically*) with a a chilli. Very spicy, but offsetted with the veggies quite well.

Rice here is served in small earthen bowls. Quite small servings. Now I'm not sure if it was done to keep the rice warm. They used small wooden ladles to scoop the rice out of the bowls. Quite a novel idea, but I found it to be more of a hinderace, coz the rice stuck to the ladle and the inside of the pot.

Mixed beans with belacan. Different from the one in KL, as in belacan dosen't overpower the veggies, and there was a generous serving of petai in the dish.

3 layer fish. This was an interesting dish. The fish meat was filleted and fried, and served with a sweet sour sauce, topped with a kerabu like salad. The fish really went well with the sauce and the salad. A great dish.

Otak Otak. Different than the one that we get in KL, where its mostly grilled with banana leaves. Here its prepared in a coconut. The otak otak was well cooked, with a slight spicy kick to it. And since its in a coconut, the otak otak had this extra kick to it with the coconut flesh that you scrape off when taking the otak otak.

Tomyam. Pretty standard, with a lot of cili padi.

Overall a good lunch, and as expected of the Thai food in Kedah. Overall damage came to RM90, with beer and extra rice. Quite value for money.

The Long Overdue Post about the Birthday...

Yea, I guess I should be posting something new here. Considering that the last post was in freaking July.

Yea, so the birthday came and went. Another year, another birthday. Turning 23 didn't exactly have the "OMGBBQCHICKENWING i'm another year older" feeling. It was just another day, and another reason to go makan...

This year, the ppl organized a makan thing at Yuen's Steamboat at Sunway Mentari. Sadly there are no pics from my camera from the dinner. Reason being is that I didn't take any pictures, and the fact that I was late for the dinner... like 2 hours late... What to do? All in the name of work...So all pics that you see here is shamelessly ripped from Michelle's FB...

F4 Fish Head at USJ

Gatherings are always fun. You get to meet up with friends, which is difficult nowadays as we have jobs, and classes and whatnot. Long gone are the days when we can chill and relax at any time, and college and classes were just minor inconveniences.

Still, time goes on. We each have our things to do. So whatever gathering that we can muster, we try to get as many people that are available and go. When I mean "go", I mean go eat...

So some time back, since the Baboon was gonna go back to Aussie, we decided to go makan. And since I usually come up with new makan places, I decided that we go makan at F4 Fish Head at USJ.

The ride there was interesting... to say the least. From a clearly defined plan of meeting up and going, it soon became night of late-ness, confusion and driving to Menara Millenium and back to USJ.

But as usual, we had good music, jokes, and hopes of letting Serene pay us for dinner...

Of course we didn't make her pay la... But we could...

This place is quite well known for their fish head. So between the 7 of us, we decided to go with a fish head dish, and several others.

The fish head curry is probably the best I have had until today. The curry was just nice. Not too thick, but not too watery. The fish head was meaty, although it was not cut properly. Still, a minor detail in otherwise a very good dish.

Sweet and sour pork. Pure awesomeness. Then again, its kinda hard to mess up sweet and sour pork.

Hot plate toufu. Quite good, but I think Japanese toufu would have been better.

Butter sotong. I personally found it a bit hard. Didn't really enjoy it, but the others seemed to enjoy it.

Kailan with garlic. Nothing special. Not bad, but not awesome either.

At the end, the damage came to about 17 dollars per head, along with chinese tea. Not too bad, considering that there was fish head and sotong. Driving there is not that bad (*i was actually suprised as to how close it was to Giant USJ*) but the roads are terrible. Overall, a good place to go for really affordable fish head.

Fish Head Noodles and Loh Shi Fun at Goon Wah

The advantages of being sick is that you (*hopefully*) don't have to go to work. Sure the being stuck at home and not being able to go out is a downside, but nevertheless, its a basiclly a day to rest. What better way to relax than to eat right?

Since my dad was in town, and he has been to this place before, he took the family there to have some, as he put it, "something really good".

I am sad to say that despite my love for food and trying new food, I have never actually tried proper fish head dishes, except for the one at SS2, when the work people and I went for lunch. I have always wanted to try it, but invariably saving myself for the fish head curry at Chan Sow Lin.

Goon Wah is a pretty famous place judging by the number of reviews the place has on the internet. Their speciality is their Fish Head Noodle's with XO.

Actual conversation while leaving the restaurant:-

Me: You know, the food was good, but I have a feeling that there was some alcohol in the fish head soup.
Mom:No la...
Me: (*Looks back at the sign board and sees large "XO" across the board*) Rite....

When we arrived there, the place was pretty packed, but luckily a table cleared quickly, and we managed to get place real fast. Since my dad knows what to order, we let him order.

Service here was pretty fast. We sat, and everything was served quite fast. The food itself came really fast, which was about 10 minutes after we ordered, and the place was really packed.

The first thing on the list is the fish head noodles. A big bowl, with the fish head chopped up, with really thick noodles. The soup itself was a bit tangy, with tomatoes and preserved vegetables giving it a lot of stuff to sift through to get to the fish and noodles. Taste-wise, it was good. A little milk was added to it. However, the amount of things floating around in the soup kinda makes it a chore to get to the fish and noodles. The soup however, was awesome, and I ended up just drinking the soup.

The loh shi fun, however, was pure awesomeness. The best loh shi fun that I have tasted, till this day, is the one at Murni. The loh shi fun at Lucky in Sri Petaling comes a close second. This blows both of them out of the water. While the usual preparation is the noodles cooked in the claypot with minced pork and an egg, the preparation here had less pork and more fried prawns, that gave it a nice crunchy feel. Combined with the chilli paste that they provided, it was pure joy to eat.

Total damage: RM27 for large servings of each dish and 4 iced chinese tea. The fish head noodles was not great, but the loh shi fun made up for it. The weird thing about this place is that it only opens on weekdays from 10 to 3.30. Will definately head here again if I get the chance.

Now all I gotta do is fall sick again...
